Midweek Basketball Provides Three Nailbiters

A full week of high school basketball opened on Tuesday with the Skyview Panthers traveling to Homer for South Central Conference games against the Mariners, and the Kenai Kardinals hosting the Seward Seahawks in non-conference games at KCHS.

Skyview Girls 29 – Homer 28

The Skyview Panthers and Homer Mariners battled throughout Tuesday’s game with the lead changing four times in the final minute of the contest.  Joanne Glaves sunk two freethrows to give Skyview a 29-28 lead with three seconds remaining.  Panthers win 29-28.  The game was tied at 25-25 after three quarters.  Glaves lead the Panthers with 10 points; Homer’s Madison Akers scored 18, including 16 points in the third quarter.

The Panther girls face ACS and Houston in SCC play on Friday and Saturday.

Skyview Boys 45 – Homer 52

The Skyview Panthers rallied from a 12-point deficit to close to within five of the Mariners; as the Mariners held off Skyview 52-45 in South Central Conference play.  Skyview was lead by Micah Hilbish with 22 points.

The Panther boys host ACS and Houston at Skyview Friday and Saturday.


Kenai Girls 26 – Seward 24

In a low-scoring, non-conference contest the Kenai Kardinal girls held-off Seward for a 26-24 victory.  Kenai lead 22-13 after three quarters and a late Seward rallied brought the Seahawks to within a point at 25-24 with nine seconds remaining.  Kenai’s Hannah Barcus converted one of two freethrows and the Seahawks final shot was off-the-mark; Kardinals win 26-24.

Kenai Boys 45 – Seward 47

A last second, three-point shot at the buzzer propelled the Seward Seahawks past the Kenai Kardinals 47-45 in non-conference basketball action Tuesday at KCHS.  Seward lead by seven points into the final three minutes and lead until the Kardinals Josh Kackman hit a shot to give Kenai the lead 45-44 with eight seconds remaining.  Seward’s Micheal Wolfe connects on the game-winner from behind the arc as time expired.  Final score: Seward 47 – Kenai 45.  The Kardinals were lead by Jonah Theisen with 11 points.

Kenai will travel to the valley for Northern Lights Conference games against Palmer and Wasilla on Friday and Saturday.
