Democratic candidate for governor Byron Mallott will be at the Soldotna Public Library tomorrow for a meet and greet from 11am to 1pm.
Unlike the current governor, Sean Parnell, Mallott said he supports the recent Bristol Bay Watershed Assessment from the EPA. The Native leader issued a statement over the weekend, believing that “in this place, the Pebble Mine is a mine too far.”
Mallot said that “Once the door to mining is opened in this sensitive area, it can never be closed again,” and felt, “the science confirms what the commercial fishing industry, sport fishers and the people of Bristol Bay have long believed: This mine would upset a delicate natural balance, threaten jobs and destroy a sacred way of life in Alaska.”
Mallot has the support of the Alaska Democratic Party, with Anchorage State Senator Hollis French runnung as Mallott’s Lt. Gov.
