The local jobless rate grew by over a percent for January, and is also higher than the statewide rate.
The State Department of Labor and Workforce Development say the January unemployment rate for the Kenai Peninsula Borough stood at 9.8 percent. That compares to 8.5 percent in December 2012, but is lower than last January when the unemployment rate stood at 10.6 percent.
The number of people without jobs on the Kenai Peninsula Borough grew by 317 jobs between December and January; however, the local workforce also shrank by 192 jobs for the same period.
In January, state economists say that a total 26,294 were employed in the local area, compared to 26,486 in the previous month.
Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January is 6.7 percent, slightly higher than December‘s rate of 6.6 percent also lower than the 7.2 unemployment percent rate from January 2012.
Nationally, the unemployment rate was slightly higher at 7.9 percent for January.
