The jobless rate continues to go up on the Kenai Peninsula. The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development has released unemployment numbers for January. The unemployment rate for the Kenai Peninsula Borough, before being seasonally adjusted, stood at 13.1 percent for the month of January. In December, the local jobless rate was 10.8 percent. One year ago, the unemployment rate was 11.9 percent. In January, 3,477 people in the Kenai Peninsula Borough reported being unemployed. In December, 2,805, people reported being unemployed in the Kenai Peninsula Borough.
In January, the state unemployment rate, before being seasonally adjusted, was 9.6 percent. That compares to 8.2 percent in December and 8.8 percent in January of 2009.
