LNG Project Hopes to Finish Contract Awards in Next Few Weeks

The most recent step completed in the proposed Alaska LNG Project is completing the pre-FEED contract award process.

Project Manager Steve Butt said they have identified the best contractors to implement the infrastructure needed and hope to wrap-up the contract awards in the next few weeks.

Butt: “What they’ll do is for each portion of the project, they complete all the design work required to secure all the permit tests, the schedule, test the risk, test the cost, so we get through what’s called a phased or gated approach.”

He said he often uses the analogy of building a house as the pre-FEED process, applying that analogy to the steps they are in now.

Butt: “Then you get into more detail design when you ask yourself, do I use 2×4 in the wall, do I use 2×6 in the wall, how long are the nails I’m going to use and kind of other material am I going to use to build this so when you actually go talk to the builder to build the house you know exactly what you want to built and you know that when you build it you’re going to be happy for 30 years. The LNG project has a 30+ year life. You want to make sure you’re very thorough in the regulatory process and the design process so when they build it, it works and it generates the benefits that the investors are going to look to see to offset the risk that they’ve taken with the project.”
