The Alaska State Trooper post in Soldotna is now offering a Citizen Academy. Troopers says this is the first Citizen Academy offered on the Kenai Peninsula, though the program has been popular in the Mat-Su Valley.
The program is based on Citizen Police Academy model being formed by police agencies throughout the country, and aims to provide greater communication between the community members and law enforcement officers. The Troopers say that the Citizen Academy hopes to alleviate some misunderstanding by providing citizens a firsthand look at the statutes, regulations and policies that guide troopers in their daily duties.
The first session in Soldotna will take place each Wednesday evening, between 6:30pm and 9:30pm from March 13-22. Classes will be held at the Emergency Response Center at 253 Wilson Lane in Soldotna.
Class registration is required and applicants must be at least 18-years old and reside in Alaska. The deadline to apply is March 4, 2013.
