KRSMA Opposing HEA Project

5/28/2010

The Kenai River Speical Management Area’s Advisory Board has voted to oppose a Homer Electric Association project at Grant Lake.  Alaska State Parks Superintendent Jack Sinclair explained the advisory board vote from the KRSMA meeting earlier this month.

Sinclair stated that this vote is up for reconsideration.  Kenai City Manager Rick Koch confirmed that Kenai had asked for this reconsideration.  Koch wants to see the KRSMA vote postponed, if the city is successful with its reconsideration request.

Koch told our news department that he doesn’t think that the KRSMA Advisory Board has the authority to send a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in opposition to the HEA project.  Koch said, if KRSma does have that authority, then the political subdivisions on the KRSMA board, such as the City of Kenai and the City of Soldotna, should have their elected councils vote on this matter.

We must tap into the renewable energy sources we have here on the Kenai and every where else in this great nation.
Not only will this keep our environment healthy it will also keep a bit of money out of the coffers of those who hate
us. I grew up near Grant lake. When I was a freshman in high school there was talk of a hydro project there. It was the
right thing to do then and it is the right thing to do now.
