3:45 Update:

Schools in the Kenai and Soldotna areas were placed on a safety watch today, which is not a lockdown.

Public information officer Pegge Erkeneff…

Erkeneff: “We did have a call from law enforcement this morning notifying the district about a potential safety concern with unidentified schools, given that we just as a precautionary measure we put schools on a little bit of extra safety watch or alert which means everything was normal but we had some extra supervision during recess and activities on school grounds.”

She said that the district was following law enforcement’s lead and is working with them to investigate the credibility of the safety concern.

All school activities, bus schedules, and after school activities are on their regular schedules.

Erkeneff said since it was only precautionary, parents were not notified via alerts.

Erkeneff: Principals will be letting parents know what happened and that there’s a little bit of extra awareness going on, probably through their regular methods of communications but there were no extra things sent out during the day concerning it. We did have a few calls come in wondering what was happening and we took those calls as they came but everything was on a normal schedule, it was just that safety watch or heightened awareness.”

Original Post:

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District has confirmed they had schools on a safety watch today.

It is unclear if the actions were part of a drill that schools held in regards to the newly implemented ALICE training the district has been working on.

ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate though not necessarily in that order.

Spokeswoman Pegge Erkeneff said she is working on getting more information.

We will have more information on what schools were affected and whether or not it was a drill as soon as that information becomes available to us.
