During October the Kenai Fire Department visited about 1,000 students in the city for Fire Prevention Month.

Kenai Fire Marshall Tom Carver said one reoccurring statement they heard worried them.

Carver: “When we’re talking about the sounds that a smoke detector makes, we noticed that a lot of the kids or most of the kids knew what the low battery alarm was on a smoke detector, the single beep that goes off about once a minute, and that was pretty alarming to us because what that tells us is that people aren’t checking their smoke detectors every month.”

He added that they encouraged children to remind their parents when they hear those sounds.
