The local jobless rate grew by just over half a percent last month, and is also higher than the statewide rate.
The State Department of Labor and Workforce Development say the December unemployment rate for the Kenai Peninsula Borough stood at 8.4 percent. That compares to 7.8 percent in November, but is lower than last December when the unemployment rate stood at 9.4 percent.
The number of people without jobs on the Kenai Peninsula Borough grew by 185 jobs between November and December; however, the local workforce grew by 349 jobs for the same period.
Last month, state economists say that a total 27,121 were employed in the local area, compared to 26,772 in November.
Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December is 6.6 percent, slightly lower than November‘s rate of 6.7 percent also lower than the 7.4 unemployment percent rate from December 2011.
Nationally, the unemployment rate remained flat at 7.8 percent for December.
