The Kenai Chamber of Commerce was recognized with the most prestigious state award from the Alaska Chamber of Commerce in Fairbanks on Wednesday.
Chamber President Johna Beech says she did not know Kenai had been nominated for the 2015 State Chamber of the Year award.
Beech: “She’s like, the winner is Kenai Chamber of Commerce, and I sat there. And she said, ‘Kenai Chamber of Commerce!’ and everyone at the table turns and looks at me and said ‘Johna that’s you!’ And I’m like ‘What?'”
The award recognizes Kenai for “the consistent community involvement and excellent business reputation of a local chamber of commerce in Alaska.”
Beech says that wasn’t the only surprise at the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce Conference.
Beech: “When I first got there and registered, one of the employees of the state chamber pulled me aside and said that they are going to host the State Chamber Conference in Kenai next year.”
She thanked all of the chamber’s board, business, and community members, saying Kenai could not have won without them and their support.
