The City of Kenai is continuing work on policies and procedures for volunteers at the Kenai Animal Shelter.
Until then, volunteers who usually walk animals are on hold according to City Manager Rick Koch.
Koch: “We’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished at the Animal Control Shelter, seeing a dramatic decrease in animals that are necessary to euthanize and that’s a testament to the staff and volunteers and those volunteers are valued and will continue to be valued. We just want to make sure we have a program that is accurate, clear and concise and works well for ourselves.”
The city has been researching other animal shelters around the state and nation to overhaul the policies and Koch said he hopes to have the new ones drafted within the next two weeks.
The in-depth look by administration was spurred after a woman was bit by a dog earlier in March.
