The Kenai Kardinals rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second period with four goals in the final 20 minutes for a 4-3 North Star Conference hockey victory over the Homer Mariners.
Kenai and Homer battled through a scoreless first period and through the first four minutes of the second period before the Mariners scored a pair of goals in under a minute to take a quick 2-0 lead. Kenai’s Zack Zulkanycz immediately scored off the center ice draw in just :09 seconds to draw the Kardinals in 2-1. Zach Mese added a goal to close the second period.
In the third period, tied 2-2, Zulkanycz opened the scoring with an goal; only to have the Mariners answer 30 seconds later with Homer’s third score. The game winner was scored by Zulkanycz with under five minutes remaining in regulation. With Kenai leading 4-3, Homer pulled their goalie and with a penalty on the Kardinals pushed for a goal with an extra attacker. The Kardinal defense, lead by goalie Keegan Remsen, held off the mariners for the final 1:30 for a 4-3 NSC victory.
Kenai and SoHi hockey teams travel to Anchorage for contests against South and Service on Friday and Saturday, December 9th and 10th.
