Think About It…… December 29, 2010
Now….. Alaska appears to have not one but two liberal Democratic Senators in Washington. Whether you think that is good or bad…..it does appear that both of Alaska’s Senators are definitely very liberal Democrats and Republican representation for our state, in the Senate, is out of the picture completely.
It all started in our Primary Election last August with Republicans, allowing only members of their Republican party to select their candidate to run in the Alaska General Election in November. Those Republican voters overwhelmingly rejected their incumbent Senator, Lisa Murkowski.
That vote against Murkowski was a real upset and it certainly upset Lisa Murkowski. You talk about taking the wind out of your sails? What should I do? Lisa asked her supporters. What should I do? “The Republicans have let me down” was her comment to the media shortly after that upset.
So, Lisa decided that she would not accept her party’s decision to throw her out in favor of Republican Joe Miller. Lisa decided to run as a “write in” candidate.
She and her supporters could see that running without the support of a party would mean a second defeat. So, it was then that the decision was made to go after the support of Democrats. Long time Democrats like Bill Sheffield, Mike Navarre, Alaska Federation of Natives and many, many other long time Democrats across the state. All of a sudden, as you drove around Alaskan communities you noticed many Murkowski signs, at business locations and in the front lawns of the most “die hard” Democrats. It was shocking, to many people familiar with Alaska politics.
Then, came the money. Over a million dollars donated from Native Corporations and the AFN alone
and then they did it. The Democrats with the support of the liberal arm of the Republican Party elected Lisa Murkowski and what a different Lisa Murkowski we are returning to the US Senate.
Make no mistake. Lisa is beholden to Alaska Democrats. She was elected as a “no party-write in” candidate rejected by the Republican Party. Even though she will serve as a “Republican”, it stands to reason that she must vote as a Democrat whenever possible.
In the “lame duck” congress she has already joined fellow liberal Democrat Mark Begich and supported President Obama on some key issues: Yes to repeal “don’t ask don’t tell” policy…… Yes to the Obama backed compromise tax cut bill…. Yes to the arms treaty with Russia….. Yes to the Dream Act which would have given legal status to millions of Illegal aliens! And we can expect more: Lisa is against the overturn of “Roe vs Wade”……against banning Embryonic stem cell research on the bodies of aborted babies…… against a ban of funding of abortion groups….. against restoring the Mexico City Policy and against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
She wants nothing to do with positions of the “Tea Party Express” or any of the newly elected Senators supporting the conservative “Tea Party” stand on the issues. So, unfortunately, it appears that with both of our Alaskan Senators voting with liberal Democrats and the most liberal un-American President America has ever placed in office, that we are now part of the problem rather that part of the solution.
