House Committee to Discuss Short Term Comfish Licenses

Today, the State House Special Committee on Fisheries will discuss Alaska Department of Fish and Game statistics on the purchase of 7-Day commercial crew licenses.

Rep. Seaton of Homer said that this license was created by the Legislature as a way for tourists to experience commercial fishing in Alaska.  These short-term crew licenses are offered at a rate much lower than the annual commercial crew license.  There is concern that fishing crew members are purchasing numerous consecutive short term licenses instead of an annual license.

Seaton said that as a trend, this would decrease license receipt revenue to the state and impact the Fishermen’s Fund, a fund administered by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development to assist with the medical costs of accidents incurred during commercial fishing operations
