Homer Voters to Decide Bag Ban

The Homer plastic bag ban went into effect on January 1, but on October 1 voters will get to decide whether it stays.

Local resident Justin Arnold gathered the signatures for a voter repeal of the ban. He’s also running for City Council.

Arnold: “What I’m saying is that it’s not about the plastic bags. It’s about the government stepping into every aspect of our lives and controlling it. It’s plastic bags today, but what’s the next thing? The size of house we can live in? I mean, that’s the biggest polluter in the world, is our homes.”

The ban carried a $50 penalty, though City Council members said it was difficult to enforce.
