Recently the Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board discussed the fate of an old school building in Homer.

Homer City Manager Walt Wrede said the building was transferred to the city around 2000 and has since become less and less energy efficient.

Wrede: “There’s a discussion about whether or not to refurbish that building or simply tear it down and use the property for something else and right now a new public safety building is just about right at the top of the cities (Capital Improvement Project) list and the council has appropriated some initial money to do a site selection process and a space needs study. And that site based on that process that site has be identified as the best.”

He said that there have been concerns as that public safety building would contain the Homer jail which would be close to schools.

Wrede: “Several parents have showed up at committee meetings and expressed concerned about having a jail close by other parents are happy that the police are going to be pretty close by some of the schools because there’s a lot of things that can happen there that police presence might help to prevent.
