The opening games for the high school varsity basketball season and the showdown between Kenai and SoHi hockey; SoHi takes three on a Tuesday night.
SoHi vs Kenai Hockey Showdown
The Soldotna Stars held-off a charging Kenai hockey squad for a 3-2 North Star Conference victory for the Stars in hockey action on Tuesday at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.
SoHi jumped-out to a 2-0 lead with first period goals by Kenny Griffin and Hunter Lott. The Kardinals closed with a second period goal by Ross Hanson; however, the Stars regained their two-goal advantage with a Nick Wrobel , power play goal for a 3-1 advantages. Kenai quickly answered with a goal by Jake Eubank with nearly ten minutes remaining in regulation time. The Stars hold down the Kenai offense for the 3-2 victory. SoHi improves to 3-1 in NSC play; Kenai drops to 3-2 in the NSC.
SoHi @ Skyview Basketball Opener
The basketball season opened with the Skyview Panthers hosting the Soldotna Stars.
The Soldotna girls, from the Northern Lights Conference, easily handled the Skyview Panther girls, who play in the South Central Conference, 43-23. The Stars held Skyview scoreless in the first quarter, opening a 17-0 lead. SoHi lead 32-2 at the half. Katelynn Kerkvliet lead all scorers with 18 points.
The SoHi boys faced a much stronger challenge from the Panther boys, in-route-to a 52-43 SoHi victory. The Panthers lead 5-0 early and the teams were tied 10-10 after one quarter. SoHi lead 29-19 at the half and built a 20-point lead into the third quarter. A late rush by the Panthers closed the gap to single-digits in the fourth quarter; SoHi holds for a 52-43 non-conference win.
