Officials with the Pebble Partnership say that they continue to work extensively on environmental issues pertaining to their possible mining operation near Illiamna. Spokesperson Mike Heatwole spoke at the recent Industry Outlook Forum in Kenai.
He said that the Pebble Partnership has invested over $100 million for the study of the environment around the proposed site. He said it includes the study of water and wildlife.
He estimated that a proposal would need about 67 major federal and state permits to go into operation. He said that doesn’t include the permits for stream crossings. He said the Pebble Mine, if started, would be one of the most scrutinized projects in the history of the state.
