Local businesses reported receiving suspicious phone calls last week from individuals imitating Homer Electric Association employees.
Gallagher: “Where someone was impersonating Homer Electric and demanding that they pay a bill or their electricity would be cut off immediately. This was a scam, it was not Homer Electric and we learned later on that this is happening at a higher pace in Anchorage as well.”
Joe Gallagher with HEA also stated these kinds of phone scams have been happening to utilities across the nation.
He added that scammers are becoming more tech savvy and many of the reports said the caller ID showed it originating from Homer Electric.
HEA encourages anyone who receives a suspicious phone call like this to hang up immediately and contact the company’s toll free number at 1-800-478-8551.
