Harris Discusses Potential for Pebble Mine Study

The Chairman of the Legislative Council, Representative John Harris of Valdez, was part of yesterday morning’s House Majority Press Conference. He confirmed, again, that he has received requests by other lawmakers to fund an independent study on the Pebble Mine permitting process. Harris explained that, currently, funding is not available for this independent study.

Representative Harris said he is not opposed to funding an independent study of the Pebble Mine permitting process. Harris said he would be in contact with the four chairmen of the Finance Committees in the Senate and House about the possibility of a re-appropriation of funds for a study. Harris said that officials with the Pebble Mine are not opposed to a study, as long as they don’t have to pay for it. Harris said a decision on an independent study should be known by the end of this session.
