Governor Parnell Signs Legislation to Allow for Air Ambulance Memberships

Gov. Sean Parnell signed Senate Bill 159 today which will allow air ambulance service providers to offer annual membership agreements, lowering costs for Southeast Alaskans.

Airlift Northwest offered medical transport services to Alaskans since 2009, enrolling them in the AirCare membership program to cover out-of-pocket costs relating to the medevac services.

Due to restructuring, the Alaska Division of Insurance deemed air ambulance services no longer exempt from state insurance code, and instructed no more members be added.

Now SB 159 will provide framework so that air medevac companies may continue to offer yearly memberships to help pay for seriouslyill or injured people to hospitals outside of Southeast Alaska which can sometimes cost up to $100,000 per flight.
