Global Economy Addressed in LNG Presentation

The Federal Office for Alaska Gas Line Project presented at a joint chamber luncheon, detailing the proposed  Alaska LNG Project’s role in global economy.

 

Larry Persily with the Federal Office said the price of natural gas in the U.S. is dropping however Asian markets have risen to twice as much.

 

Persily: “There’s a lot of demand for LNG in Japan because they shut down all their nuclear plants 3 years ago, there is massive growing demand in China which is a lot bigger country than Japan, strong economic growth and China’s trying to get off coal as its primary power generation fuel, they’ll never abandon coal but they’d like to use less of it in the future if they could for issues of air quality. So there is a lot of opportunity for LNG projects around to the world to sale there gas into that growing economy in southeast Asia.”

 

He said that there have been obstacles for LNG projects in the Lower 48 however Alaska is unique in its overseas shipping abilities.

 

The public docket on the project is currently open and Persily encouraged the community to keep an eye on studies and reports as they come out in order to make sure that the project built is as much what the community wants as it is what works for the economy.
