Genetically modified salmon will now be clearly marked before being sold, thanks to a measure introduced by U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski. Murkowski today spoke before the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee…
Sen. Murkowski(R-AK): “Look, let’s the public know what it is that they’re going to be consuming, if in fact the FDA moves forward with this genetically engineered fish, this first food from a transgenic animal application approved by the FDA. We’ve gotten resistance from the FDA on this, they basically say, ‘Look, we think that this is going to be fine. We’re not too worried about it.’ Well, any of you that have wild, strong stocks coming to your state, or hopefully wanting to have strong stocks coming to your state, you should be concerned about this.”
The measure passed by just one vote.
Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said Frankenfish was “opening Pandora’s Box,” and Jon Tester said “the public has a right to know what they’re eating.”
