Firefighters from the Division of Forestry have been busy with firefighters in the Homer and Anchor Point area in recent days. The first two fires were Friday afternoon and evening on private property along East End Road. The fourth fire was Monday evening on private party north of Tall Tree Road, near Anchor Point. Only minor damage was reported with each.
Division of Forestry spokesperson Sharon Roesch says Monday night’s fire burned 1.1 acres before it was brought under control. She said the four fires began between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and were caused by the residents themselves. Two of them were campfires. One fire was caused by burning grass in a pot. And, the cause of the fourth fire was the disposal of wood stove ashes.
Roesch said these private property fires caught the residents off-guard.
Roesch says the late thaw has also been a problem when it comes to access to these blazes.
Roesch is encouraging everyone to use caution with any outdoor burning.
