Football Season Opens Saturday With Wins For SoHi & Kenai

Opening weekend for the 2013 high school football season featured a trio of games involving local programs on Saturday, August 17th.


SoHi 55 – Eielson 13

The defending Medium School football state champions, the Soldotna Stars, defeated Eielson, the 2012 Small School state champions, 55-13 on the road at Eielson.  The Stars and Ravens each scored on their first possession; SoHi taking a 35-13 lead and the Stars did not allow a second half score.

Colton Young, senior quarterback, ran for four SoHi touchdowns and 80 yards.  Drew Gibbs rushed for 148 yards to lead the Stars to 510 rushing yards to go along with 168 passing yards.


Kenai 51 – Nikiski 16:

The Kenai Kardinals host the Nikiski Bulldogs in a cross-town, cross-divisional contest on Saturday, with Kenai dominating the second half for a 51-16 victory. The Kards and Bulldogs traded touchdowns in the first half, with three touchdowns scored in the final 2:00 minutes of the first half, including a Bulldog touchdown with no time remaining in the half.

The Kardinals scored five touchdowns in the third quarter, all by running back Jace Daniels.  Daniels scored seven touchdowns and rushed for nearly 480 yards on the day in three quarters of action.  Kenai amassed 552 rushing yards on the day.


Skyview 42 – Valdez 0

The Skyview Panthers faced the Valdez Buccaneers in the season opener for the Panthers final season of football before consolidation with SoHi.  The Panthers shutout the Bucs 42-0 behind a two touchdown 200+ yard effort by Brandon Rice.  The Panthers lead 21-0 after one quarter and 42-0 at the half.
