Football Week Six Produces Conference Victories For Conference Leaders

The high school football season kicked-off week number six of the regular season with a Thursday night Great Land Conference game victory for Nikiski over Vosnesenka 46-6.

Saturday’s schedule was spotlighted by Northern Lights Conference wins for Kenai over Skyview, 45-0  and Soldotna over Homer 59-0.

 

Nikiski 46 – Vosnesenka 6 

The Nikiski Bulldogs placed their unbeaten Great Land Conference record to the test on Thursday against the Vosnesenka Cougars at Nikiski High; and after four offensive plays lead 14-0 and were in-route-to a 46-6 victory and a 4-0 GLC record.

The Bulldogs scored on three-straight drives for a 21-0 lead; then turned the scoring opportunities over to the field goal units, successful on two of six attempts.  In all, Nikiski scored touchdowns by Micheal Stangel, with two; Jesse Eide, two; Dylan Jackson, fumble recovery for TD; and Garrett Feller.  Vosnesenka scored on a fumble recovery and return by Dennis Martushev.

The Bulldog defense forced three fumbles and three interceptions.  Final Score: Nikiski 46, Vosnesenka 6.

 

Kenai 45 – Skyview 0  

The Skyview Panthers hosted Kenai on Saturday, Skyview’s final home contest.

The Kardinals dominated on the field and recorded a 45-0 shutout of the Panthers, as Kenai improves to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Northern Lights Conference.

Kenai lead 14-0 after one quarter and 38-0 at the half.  The Kardinals added a touchdown in the third quarter for the 45-0 shutout.  Jace Daniels rushed for over 250 yards and four touchdowns; Chase Logan and Nick Beeson added touchdowns for Kenai.

Next up for the Kardinals is a non-conference Friday afternoon game against Valdez at KCHS.  The Panthers travel to SoHi for the Stars Homecoming Saturday.

 

Kenai has guaranteed a top-2 finish in the NLC with one conference game remaining: a showdown with SoHi at KCHS on October 5th.

 

 

Soldotna 59 – Homer 0

The undefeated Soldotna Stars faced the Homer Mariners, the second of four-straight NLC games for the Stars, on Saturday at Soldotna High School, overpowering Homer 59-0 to improve to 3-0 in the Northern Lights Conference.

The SoHi defense opened the scoring, recording a safety on Homer’s first possession.  The Stars, for the game recorded touchdowns by: Blake Riley, 3-yd run and 44-yd run; Ty Fenton, 1-yd run; Jake Kooly, 42-yd run and 4-yd run; Trevor Walden, 18-yd reception from Colten Young; Colten Young, 42-yd interception return for TD; Jared Chavez, 13-yd run.

With a victory, the Stars guarantee a top-2 playoff spot in the upcoming Medium School football playoffs.  SoHi is the returning state champion; Homer battled SoHi in the 2012 Medium School state championship game.
