The Northern Lights Conference and Great Land Conference football championships; as well as, seeding for the upcoming state tournaments in each division, were up for the taking in week eight of the high school football regular season. The Soldotna Stars claimed the NLC title in decisive fashion; Nikiski’s fate lies in tiebreaker.
SoHi 58 – KCHS 10 Northern Lights Conference Championship Game
The state’s only two, undefeated teams faced-off Saturday for the Northern Lights Conference football title and Soldotna High School dominate the head-to-head showdown with the Kenai Kardinals.
The SoHi Stars amassed over 500 rushing yards including two rushers each totaling over 200 yards on the ground. SoHi quarterback Colten Young rushed for 200+ yards and four touchdowns and passed for a touchdown, leading the Stars to a 58-10 NLC victory. Fullback Jake Kooly added an additional 200+ yards and two touchdowns. SoHi’s big play offense scored on runs of 72 yards, Kooly on first play by Stars; 76 yards, again Kooloy; 78 yards by Young; 89 yards by Drew Gibbs; and 80 yards by Young. SoHi’s defense produced interceptions on the Kards’ first two possessions, both by Max Conradi and added an interception by Young to end the first half. The Stars held Kenai’s ground game to under 150 yards and the Kards leading rusher Jace Daniels to under 100 yards.
Medium School Playoffs
SoHi, as the Northern Lights Conference champions, advance to host a first-round playoff game on Saturday, October 12th against the Houston Hawks, Game time set for 11:00 a.m.
Kenai will host the Kodiak Bears, the #2 vs #3 NLC, on Saturday, October 12th. Game time set for 3:00 p.m.
The first-round winners will advance to play the Southeast Conference champion Juneau and the SEC#2 vs #3 winner at Dimond High School in the Medium School playoffs semi-final round at Dimond High School on Saturday, October 19th.
The Stars are the reigning Medium School state champions from 2012; Kenai won the first Medium School football title in 2011.
Nikiski 27 – Monroe 37 Great Land Conference Game
The Nikiski Bulldogs missed an opportunity to claim the Great Land Conference football championship at home on Saturday falling to Monroe Catholic 37-27. The Monroe victory creates a three-way, first-place tie in the GLC and a coin flip tiebreaker to determine seeding into the Small School football playoffs. Nikiski defeated Eielson; Eielson downed Monroe; and Monroe topped Nikiski–all three finish GLC play with 5-1 records. Monroe has won the coin flip and will host Barrow; Nikiski will host Eielson on Friday, October 11th at 4:30 p.m.
Skyview 0 – Kodiak 61 Northern Lights Conference Game
The Skyview closed the regular season on the road at Kodiak dropping the Panthers final game of the regular season and in the Panthers football history 61-0 to the Bears.
