High school football in Alaska will again be marked by change in the classification of schools, conference size and state qualifying berths.
Medium School Division
Soldotna High School, the 2012 state Medium School football champion, and the rest of the Medium School division will face increased competition with the addition of formerly Large School programs North Pole and Juneau. Juneau moves from the Large School Railbelt Conference into the Medium School classification, bringing two championships and two runner-up finishes at the Large School level. North Pole, a perennial power in Fairbanks, also joins the Medium School division. Both will play in the Southeast Conference.
The Medium School playoffs will for 2013-14 include four teams from the Southeast Conference and four teams from the Northern Lights Conference.
Small School Division
In the Small School division, Vosnesenka moves into the Great Land Conference for 2013. The top four teams ( seven teams currently play in the division) advance to the Small School playoffs.
Large School Division
The state’s Large School classification will see changes in the qualifying standards for the state championships. The Railbelt Conference losses one state berth and will qualify three teams to the playoffs. The Cook Inlet Conference gains a team and increases to five qualifiers to the Large School playoffs.
