Fishing Restrictions Placed on Anchor River

6/30/2010

The Homer Office for Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced, yesterday, that the current closure for all fishing in the marine waters adjacent to the Anchor River two miles north and south of the Anchor River mouth, and one mile offshore would be extended. The closure will be in effect from tonight at midnight through Saturday, July 31st.

Fish and Game says the Anchor River escapement of king salmon through June 28th was 3,349 fish.  This year’s king salmon run is behind the 2008 run through June 28th by 914 fish. The final escapement for 2008 was 5,806 fish.  The average escapement count for June 26th through the 28th was 15 compared to the average for the same dates in 2008 of 76 and 2009 of 65.  So, Fish and Game is uncertain that the sustainable escapement goal for king salmon will be achieved, and closure of the marine waters adjacent to the Anchor River mouth is necessary to protect Anchor River-bound king salmon needed to achieve the spawning escapement goal.
