Drifters to Fish Drift Area 1 for Today’s Regular Period

The commercial fisheries office of Fish and Game in Soldotna has announced that commercial drift fishing will be open today in the Drift Gillnet Area 1 of the Upper Subdistrict for today’s 12-hour opening beginning at 7:00 a.m..

Drift Gillnet Area 1 is defined in regulation as open waters of the Central District south of Kalgin Island at 60º 20.43’ N. latitude.

Commercial Fisheries biologist Pat Shields said that drifters are reminded that fishing is closed within one and one-half miles of the mean high tide mark in the Upper Subdistrict south of the Kenai River as setnet fishing is closed in this area.

Drift gillnet fishing is occurring in Area 1 to reduce the harvest of Northern District salmon while harvesting sockeye salmon bound for the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers
