Drifters Fishing in Drift Area 1 Today

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced via emergency order that the Upper Cook Inlet Drift Fleet, during their regular opening from 7:00am to 7:00pm today will be fishing in the Drift Gillnet Area 1, which is defined in regulation as open waters of the Central District south of Kalgin Island at 60º 20.43’ N. latitude.

Pat Shields, Commercial Fisheries Biologist with the Soldotna office of Fish and Game said that according the Central District Drift Gillnet Fishery Management Plan, from July 16 through July 31, one regular 12-hour fishing period per week will be restricted to either Drift Gillnet Area 1 or the Expanded Kenai and Expanded Kasilof Sections of the Upper Subdistrict, but not both together.
