Week four of the high school football season featured divisional games for all four central peninsula football programs.
The undefeated Soldotna Stars and Kenai Kardinals win on the road; Nikiski and Skyview host home contests.
Soldotna High 62 – Thunder Mountain High 6
The Soldotna Stars traveled to Juneau to face the Southeast Conference Thunder Mountain Falcons on Friday night.
SoHi’s dominating rushing game and stifling defense overpowered Thunder Mountain early and often; as the Stars clipped the Falcons 62-6 in Northern Lights Conference action. SoHi lead 47-0 at the half.
In the newly revised Medium School playoff format, Thunder Mountain has been joined by North Pole and Juneau in the Southeast Conference and will vie for one of four playoff positions.
The Stars are currently 2-0 in the Northern Lights Conference, 4-0 on the season.
Kenai Central High 22 – Kodiak High 21
The Kardinals eventually landed on the “Rock” for an 11:00 a.m. contest to face the Kodiak Bears in Northern Lights Conference action on Saturday.
The Kardinals ground game has accounted three touchdowns in Kenai’s narrow 22-21 victory over Kodiak. Kenai lead 22-7 at the half and 22-14 after three quarters. The Bears scored early in the final quarter; however, failed on a two-point conversion and Kenai retained the lead at 22-21. A Kardinal fumble on the Kenai 26 yard line gave Kodiak the football with a chance to take the lead; Kodiak failed to move the ball and punted. Kenai, running the clock, turned the ball back to the Bears with :49 seconds remaining in the game. Kenai again held for a 22-21 NLC vicory.
Kenai improves to 2-0 in the NLC and 4-0 overall.
Nikiski High 56 – Seward High 6
The Bulldogs continued victorious in Greatland Conference action with a 56-6 home contest victory against the struggling Seward Seahawks.
Seward opened the scoring with a 52-yard touchdown reception on the games second play from scrimmage. That would prove to be all the scoring for the Seahawks.
Nikiski lead 44-6 after one quarter on touchdowns by: Mike Stangel, 6-yard run; Hunter Holloway, 43-yard reception from Dennis Anderson; Stangel, 10-yard run; Holloway, 7-yard reception; Broussard, 36-yard interception return for TD; Stangel, 52-yard run.
Add in second quarter touchdowns by: Christian Riddall, 4-yard run; Stangel field goals of 27 and 25 yards.
Halftime score 56-6 Final score: Nikiski 56, Seward 6.
Skyview High 0 – Homer High 30
The Homer Mariners spoiled the Panthers Homecoming Saturday with a 30-0 Mariner victory.
