Democrats, Parnell Face Off Over SB21

Posted: August 19, 2013 at 3:31 pm

The Democratic push for a repeal of SB 21 is continuing. Anchorage Senator Bill Wielechowski is stepping up the pace, with a promise to publish weekly reasons to repeal Governor Parnell’s oil tax “giveaway” legislation.

Sen. Wielechowski’s first reason:

“As recently as 2006, 15 of 19 North Slope oil fields paid zero

production taxes. Yet, production dropped 45% from 1988 to 2005 under these extremely low tax rates.”

On the other side, Governor Parnell has been sharing testimonials in favor of the restructure. Priscilla Simmons is an engineer with CH2M Hill…

Simmons: “Going from there well tie-ins to ten well tie-ins, it’s simple math. It’s working. It’s not ‘if and when.’”

Although SB21 becomes law today, the debate still has another year to run its course before the question of repeal will be put to voters.
