DEC Says Kenai Bacteria Levels Still High

The State Department of Environmental Conservation is still concerned by the bacteria levels recorded at Kenai beaches. They say the levels are several times higher than state standards for recreational waters.

The DEC’s Timothy Stevens encouraged…

Stevens: “Meaning if you’re out wading in the water, or you somehow come in contact with the beach water, probably rinse yourself off afterwards. Definitely don’t drink the water, if you catch any fish or shellfish from the water, make sure you rinse them with tap water before you process them or definitely before you eat them.”

Stevens said fish also need to be cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees.

The DEC is still unsure why the levels are so high, but say the bacteria is usually carried by warm bodies animals. The will continue to collect samples until mid-August.
