Crews Battle Monday Morning Skyline Drive Blaze

Yesterday morning, just after 9:50, crews with Central Emergency Services, with assistance from the Kenai Fire Department were called to a reported structure fire at 47200 Denali St. located off of Skyline Drive. CES Captain Lesley Quelland told us that once crews arrived on scene, crews found a residential home that was fully involved with heavy smoke and fire.

Quelland told us that crews believe the origin of the fire was located in the hom’es kitchen in the area of the dishwasher. The home was occupied at the time of the fire, and smoke detectors activated to alert the occupants. The owner of the home, Mikael J. Barnes, was forced by the fire to jump out of a second story window; Barnes was later taken to Central Peninsula Hospital via a private vehicle, declining treatment from responding CES crews.

Damage in this case was estimated at $150,000 and crews were able to save $27,000 as crews were able to save on attached structure during the active firefight.

Quelland said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
