Senate joint resolution 9 was pulled from the Senate floor by its sponsor Sen. Mike Dunleavy today when he asked that the measure be returned to Senate Rules while he waited for some more information.
The proposed constitutional amendment would allow public money to be used for private or religious schools and had been scheduled for debate today.
Republican Sen. Gary Stevens opposed the bill and said his best guess was that the measure would get eight “yes” votes. Proposed constitutional amendments require two-thirds vote in each the Senate and the House so it would need 14 Senate votes to pass.
Supporters of SJR 9 say that this amendment would allow parents more choices in how to educate their children however opponents worry it may take money from public schools.
