Concerns Raised Over Backyard Chickens and Bears

As we reported, the Kenai City Council held a public hearing on an ordinance to allow for residents to keep “backyard” chickens. During the public hearing concerns were raised over the potential increase in bear activity within the city. Kenai Planning and Zoning Commissioner Clifford Smith…

Smith: “I would just like to remind the council of the testimony of Fish and Game department before the Planning and Zoning Commission when they said to allow chickens in the City of Kenai would increase bear encounters in the City of Kenai, and it would also increase the likelihood of defense of life and property shootings. Also, to allow chickens within Kenai’s designated bear problem area would go against their own recommendations; that is to remove attractants such as bird seed, bbq’s, and garbage.”
