Chenault: State Should Play Bigger Role in Dipnet Fishery

The opening of the Kenai River Personal Use Dipnet fishery is still months away, however, there is still myriad of discussion  way to address the fish waste generated by the three-week fishery. State House Speaker, told us that he agrees that the state should be playing a larger role in the fishery…

Speaker Cheanult(R-Nikiski): “I personally think think the state should pick up a large part of that tab, because we are the ones that pushed that fishery into the mouth of the Kenai River and the Kasilof River. The state though the board of fish made the decision on how the fishery is going to be run, if that’s how it’s going to be run, I believe the state should step up and pay the bill on that.”

There has been no legislation introduced in Juneau to address this issue to date.
