Community Slumber Party! (Shelter Simulation)The Kenai Peninsula Borough is participating in Alaska Shield 2012. Alaska Shield is an annual, state-wide exercise to test the ability of emergency responders to manage disasters and emergencies. Alaska Shield 2012 will simulate a natural gas outage in Soldotna andSterlingduring a period of extreme cold. In a real gas outage emergency, many people would have difficulty heating their homes, cooking and so on. Therefore, as part of the exercise, an emergency shelter will be established to provide a refuge for people who would not be able to stay safely in their homes. Although there will be no actual interruption in natural gas service, volunteers are needed to play the part of people needing shelter. Volunteer “victims” are invited to spend the night or stay for just a few hours. Cots will be provided, as well as an evening meal and breakfast the next morning. For more information, or if you would like to participate, contact:
