Kenai Peninsula College Requesting Proposals for Sign Base

Now Through March 1st, 2012

Kenai PeninsulaCollege’s Kenai River Campus is requesting proposals from artists interested in creating work to be placed on the sign base at the corner ofKalifornsky Beach RoadandCollege Roadin Soldotna. The deadline to submit is 5 p.m. March 1. Finalists will be selected by March 31 and installation must be completed by Aug. 1. The budget is $15,000 to cover costs of purchasing and installing the artwork. The RFP and photos of the sign base will be posted at www.kpc.alaska.edu. There are no guidelines for the material, approach or form involved in the artwork. Selection criteria will include quality, appropriateness and originality of the artist’s concepts; durability, maintenance requirements and safety considerations, and quality of the artist’s past work. Alaska Shield Shelter Exercise

Community Slumber Party! (Shelter Simulation)The Kenai Peninsula Borough is participating in Alaska Shield 2012. Alaska Shield is an annual, state-wide exercise to test the ability of emergency responders to manage disasters and emergencies. Alaska Shield 2012 will simulate a natural gas outage in Soldotna andSterlingduring a period of extreme cold. In a real gas outage emergency, many people would have difficulty heating their homes, cooking and so on. Therefore, as part of the exercise, an emergency shelter will be established to provide a refuge for people who would not be able to stay safely in their homes. Although there will be no actual interruption in natural gas service, volunteers are needed to play the part of people needing shelter. Volunteer “victims” are invited to spend the night or stay for just a few hours. Cots will be provided, as well as an evening meal and breakfast the next morning.
