The local school district is holding a candlelight vigil for homeless youth and families next Thursday, November 7, from 6-7pm.
The vigil will take place in Farnsworth Park in Soldotna. Organizers say homelessness affects a surprising number of local youth.
The district has a program which assists homeless youth called “Students in Transition.” So far this year, 82 students have been helped through the program: 26 on the southern peninsula and 56 on the central peninsula.
The program provides students with school lunches, school supplies, assistance with enrollment and academic support when needed. They reach out to any student who doesn’t have a stable place to sleep at night, including those living in motels, campers, tents, or with friends and relatives.
