The Alaska Division of Forestry has issued a burns advisory, with recent high winds increasing the threat of wildfires. Darren Finley at the local office said they’re strongly advising against burning any debris outside.
Finley: “The advisory will be in place until the change in weather provides relief from windy conditions. Individuals must call in daily to check on the status of burning restrictions and record the burn when conditions allow.”
Finley asked local residents to avoid lighting anything greater than a 3×3 personal ‘warming’ fire.
Finely: “Cured grass, even when matted down by snow-pack provides a highly ignitable fuel source for wildfires and will carry fire easily over frozen ground or marshy areas.”
