Bulldogs Rally For State Small School Championship: Stars Rush To Title Game Showdown

A Small School state football championship for Nikiski; a semi-final victory for the Stars to advance to the Medium School championship game and a semi-final loss for the Kardinals; all football results highlighted here.

 

Nikiski 36 – Monroe 28    Small-School State Championship Game

A fourth Small-School State Championship capped the 2013 Nikiski Bulldogs football season as the Bulldogs defeated Monroe 36-28. 

Rallying from a 12-point defecit in the third quarter, the Bulldogs scored 20 unanswered points on three rushing touchdowns by three different running backs.  Nikiski and Monroe traded scores through the first half with each team scoring a touchdown per quarter for a 16-15 Nikiski lead at the half.  In the third quarter Monroe recorded two early touchdowns to build the 12-point advantage at 28- 16.

The Nikiski offense took over with touchdowns by Christian Riddall, Michael Stangel, and Jesse Eide for a 36-28 final score.  Nikiski’s defense stymied the Rams in the second half; Michael Stangel intercepting two passes, the first would put Nikiski in position for the go-ahead touchdown.  For the game,  Nikiski rushed from over 360 yards; Monroe passed for over 300 yards.  Eide and Stangel each scored rushing touchdowns on the first half.

Nikiski adds the 2013 state championship to titles won in 2011, 2000 and 2001.

 

SoHi 63 – North Pole 33    Medium School Football Playoff Game

The Soldotna Stars will return to the state finale’ in 2013 to defend their 2012 Medium School football championship, overpowering North Pole 63-33 in semi-final action.

The Soldotna Stars offense traded blows with North Pole’s offensive attack in the first half of Saturday’s Medium School football playoff game; although the Stars posted more touchdowns to take a 42-27 halftime lead.

SoHi’s ground game amassed over 580 rushing yards including a dominating 345 yards and five touchdowns by senior fullback Jake Kooly.  The Stars offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the game leading to seven rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns.  Drew Gibbs added two rushing and one receiving touchdown; Trevor Walden caught one touchdown pass, as quarterback Colten Young threw for two touchdowns on 4 of 6 passes.

The Stars advance to face the Juneau Douglas Crimson Bears for the Medium School State Football championship on Saturday at noon at the Anchorage Football Stadium.

SoHi and Juneau are both undefeated in Alaska (Juneau has a loss to a team from Washington) and both are conference champions: SoHi, Northern Lights Conference; Juneau, Southeast Conference.

 

Juneau 42 – Kenai 15    Medium School Football Playoff Game

The Kenai Kardinals football season closed with a semi-final playoff loss to SEC #1 seed Juneau Douglas 42-15.

The Kards battled Juneau throughout the first half trailing 14-6, with a second quarter 1-yard touchown run for Jace Daniels.  The Juneau rushing game and big play offense proved too much for Kenai with Juneau running back Demetrius Campos scoring on runs on 80 yards, 85 yard kick return, 46 yards and Juneau totaling 375 offensive yards and nearly 150 return yards.

The Kardinals added a Chase Logan 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a defensive safety in the fourth quarter.  Daniels lead Kenai with 43 carries for 160 yards.

Juneau advances to the 2013 ASAA Medium School Football Championship Game set for Saturday, October 26 at the Anchorage Football Stadium.  Game time set for noon.
