Budget Debate to Begin This Week by Borough Assembly

The Borough Assembly is set to take up the Borough’s budget during tomorrow night’s assembly meeting. One of the larger portions of the Borough’s budget is funding for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. We’ve previously spoken to Dr. Steve Atwater, superintendent of the school district, who said that the district is facing a $2.5 million deficit.

Dr. Atwater: “We’ll be using our fund balance and reserves to balance our budget, and that total amount is not yet known, but that’s where we’re going to have to draw upon to make the balance, but looking ahead to the following year, the Board will be considering whether it makes sense to increase the size of class size, which would be a reduction in personnel.”
