An initiative to require legislative approval of large-scale mining activity in the Bristol Bay region was certified yesterday.
A Division of Elections’ tally shows the proposed “Bristol Bay Forever” initiative has received more qualified signatures than required.
Director Gail Fenumiai said it could soon be before voters…
Fenumiai: “It would be on the 2014 August primary election.”
The Lt. Governor certified the initiative, which will appear on the ballot unless the Legislature passes a substantially similar bill this session.
The initiative would require legislative approval for a “large-scale metallic sulfide mining operation,” which is defined as a mining proposal to extract metals including gold and copper from sulfide-bearing rock and directly disturb at least 640 acres of land.
It would almost certainly have bearing on the proposed Pebble Mine project.
