The Boys and Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula will start its Summer Food Service Program that will provide meals for teens and children.

Executive Director Heather Schloeman with the Boys and Girls Club said the program is through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Schloeman: “In the summer its open to anybody 18 and under, so you don’t have to be a club member to come, we’re open sites which means that anybody that wants to have breakfast or lunch can go to any of our sites that are serving those meals.”

Schloeman said the sites offering meals are at their main office location in Kenai, Nikiski North Star, Redoubt Elementary, Soldotna Teen Center and Kenai Teen Center.

She added that currently the teen centers do not have kitchens in which to offer meals but she has been working on that.

Schloeman: “So I actually just this morning shot out an email to Kenai Catering and to another catering service because we’d like to start serving full meals at both teen centers, but we’re not quite there yet but we’re heading in that direction.”

Schloeman also detailed how the club is eligible for the program.

Schloeman: “We’re eligible to participate in the program if we are pulling from a school district school that has 50% or greater free and reduced lunch.”
