U.S. Senator Mark Begich commented today, on the looming sequestration, the automatic federal spending cuts set to begin tonight. Begich, Alaska’s lone congressional democrat called the inability to pass serious budget cuts “crazy,” but he said that there is still an opportunity to make the smart and balanced cuts..
Sen. Begich(D-AK): “People have come to the conclusion that, you know, Friday hits we’re going to have these automatic budget cuts, that will start slowly unraveling, they won’t happen. Everyone thinks, my god, Monday its all going to cave in, that’s not what’s going to happen. It’s going to be a slow unraveling, and then I think that gives some air as we get to the end of the month when we deal with the continuing resolution, I think there’s some discussion I don’t think it’s a bad discussion. Take the appropriation bills that have already been done already for 2013, tighten them a little bit more, bring those forward, then another continuing resolution, make that a part of the closure for the 2013 budget, get that off the table. Because as you know, we do a CR, a continuing resolution, we’ll be funding things we shouldn’t be funding, like a shuttle program that doesn’t exist anymore.”
