Army Decreases Alaskan Troops, Sends Mixed Signals

U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski is accusing the U.S. Army of sending “mixed signals” when it comes to Alaska’s troop level. The U.S. Army announced it will cut troops from Fort Richardson, while making a smaller increase at Fort Wainwright. The move will see 342 fewer troops in Alaska overall.

Sen. Murkowski said the factors behind the decision weren’t clear, and she looks “forward to engaging with the U.S. Army to better understand its rationale for making this decision and working to continue our state’s robust military tradition.”

Congressman Don Young similarly said he appreciates the need to decrease troops, but he’s ” told the Department of Defense that all of Alaska’s bases are strategically important, especially when you consider our nation’s shift to the Asia-Pacific region.”
