Northern Kenai Peninsula Senator Cathy Giessel is currently sitting on the Arctic Policy Commission, which is in its second day of public meetings on Arctic issues.  Northwest Arctic Mayor Reggie Joule specifically addressed fishing conflicts…

Joule: “I think if we manage for subsistence, we take care of everything else. It takes care of sport hunters, it takes care of commercial, it takes care of some of the other things if you manage for the foundation piece.”

Joule asked if there was a possibility of co-management of the resource…

Joule: “And the conundrum that we’ve allowed ourself to be put in with federal and state management is not a good place to be, and it pits Alaskans against each other.”
