Annual Soapbox Derby This Satuday

With the annual Soapbox Derby approaching this weekend, we spoke to Scott Hammon about how preparations are going as they near towards race day.

Hammon: Well we’re just getting everything put together and ready to race, we still have some kids working on their cars and trying to get ready for raceday, on Friday we have a weigh in check in at the old Allen and Peterson spot in town and we’ll have a barbecue for the families and kids that are coming down and get the cars all ran through tech inspection and weighed and the racers weighed and all ready and then on Saturday we’ll start racing at 11 o’clock down the hill.

We asked Hammon his thoughts on how the derby affects the kids that participate.

Hammon: I think its a great thing for kids here locally, I’m amazed every year about how much I see the kids grow on both sportsmanship and confidence and just this last weekend we did tussentuin and there was a little girl that showed up probably about 12 years old and she was just so afraid and really was unsure if she even wanted to do it but with a lot of encouragement from her dad and everybody around her explaining it to her she made her first run down the hill and made her first run down the hill and she came back with the biggest smile on her face and she was just ready to go and going faster and faster everything and she was so excited about the race.
